75 years of history When Christ Worship Center was organized on June 21, 1931, it was called Elizabeth Church of God. It was located in the community of Elizabeth. A few years later the name was changed to Marietta Church of God and ultimately it became known as Christ Worship Center. In the 1930’s the Marietta Church had five pastors – F. R. Hamphries was the first pastor following the organization of the church on June 21, 1931. He served the church for a short time and Jim Ingram and Grady McCoy served in a temporary capacity as Pastor until a permanent pastor could be called. E. C. Hilton was called to serve as the permanent pastor. One day during a worship service, Brother Hilton passed out and was pronounced DEAD by a physician who had previously served as a physician in the U.S.Navy. M. E. Wilson, Ralph Cantrell, and Grady McCoy surrounded him and prayed for him and he was REVIVED. This is a documented by Dolly Rich and Ralph and Annie Cantrell. A. W. Stover also pastored the Marietta Church during the 1930’s. Permanent records are somewhat sketchy in those early years. J. C. Spence, Lewis Conner, and Connie Payne served as pastors of the Marietta Church during the 1940’s. A. W. Stover was called to pastor the Marietta Church for second time in 1946; he served until 1951. Brother Stover had a weekly Sunday morning service on WFOM, the local radio station. During his pastorate, a parsonage adjacent to the church on North Avenue was purchased. Aaron Couch Served from 1951 to 1952, and Allen Potts served from 1952 to 1953. W. W. Willoughby served from 1953 to 1955; during this pastorate the North Avenue church was remodeled. From 1955 to 1959, Walter Phillips served as pastor. In a business meeting on September 30, 1956, a motion was made to move dirt and to put Bother Phillips in charge of building a new brick church in back of the wooded frame building. They were in continue worshipping in the white wood structure until the new brick church could be built. Motion made by Curt Hamby, seconded by Hugh Power. In a business meeting held January 12, 1957, Brother Phillips was put in charge of selling the old church by sealed bids. Of course, it would have to be moved and it was sold and moved to another location by the buyer. During Bother Phillips pastorate, while he and his wife were on vacation, the parsonage was destroyed by fire. A new brick parsonage was built on the same spot where the old parsonage was standing. This, too was done while brother Phillips was pastor of the Marietta Church. Earl Gray served as pastor from 1959 to 1962. In 1960-1961, a first floor educational wing and kitchen were added to the back of the brick church on North Avenue. He resigned in 1962 and J. Lamar Gilmer was appointed pastor to replace him. While Brother Gilmer was appointed pastor to replace him. While Brother Gilmer was pastor the stage in the sanctuary was enlarged, a choir loft was built, and a baptismal pool was installed in the church. Avery G. Montgomery served as pastor from 1962 until 1966. Under his administration, a second floor was built on top of the education building on the North Avenue church. Ralph E. Bryant served as pastor from 1966 until 1971. Under this leadership, the property on North Avenue was sold and our current structure located on Canton Road was built. Thurman Hester served as pastor from 1971 until 1973. He and his family had attended the Marietta Church under the pastorate of Bother Bryant. He was an expert builder and cabinet man. He built the book cases and kitchen cabinets in the downstairs offices and kitchen. He also did the woodwork for the stained glass cross. This was done during Brother Bryant’s pastorate. E. E. Ross served as pastor from 1973 to 1974. While he was pastor, a child care center was begun. His wife directed this child care center without any monetary compensation until it became a profitable entity. Bob N. Minter served as pastor from 1974 to 1976. During that time a new parsonage was built on Westmoreland Drive. Bother Minter and his wife continued with the child care center that was begun under Brother Ross’s administration. Enough revenue was generated from the child care center to make payments on the new parsonage, pay for the church insurance, and church utilities. H. Hubert Hill pastored the Marietta Church from 1976 to 1977. T. Panter, Jr., pastored the church from 1977 to 1991. Under Brother Panter’s administration, the second-floor education wing and fellowship hall was built. The family life center (gymnasium) was also constructed. The basement was finished in the parsonage. The Youth Choir placed first in State Competition. Joe Muse pastored from 1991 until 1992. R. Glenn Rountree pastored the church from 1992 until 1994. During his administration, the choir loft was lowered and the sanctuary was refurbished. R. L. Black pastored from 1994 until 2004. Under the administration, a new parsonage with acreage was purchased. Dr. Douglas R. Stephenson pastored CWC since 2004. Under his administration we celebrated our 75th Diamond Anniversary on June 25, 2006 and completed several renovation projects to the church facilities. CWC is now lead by our Senior Pastor Dannie M. Hix. We are looking forward to great blessings, growth and outreach opportunities under the anointing God has given our pastor. Information for this church history was gathered from documents and records of Doyle F. Minter, Marilyn Stephens, Vonscylle Wislon and Jean Chastain. Every effort has been made to assure information is accurate. |
