When The Marietta Church was first organized on June 21, 1931 by Bishop A.J. Tomlinson, it was called Elizabeth Church of God. It was located in the community of Elizabeth. A few years later the name was changed to Marietta Church of God and ultimately it became known as Christ Worship Center Church of God of Prophecy.
In the 1930's the Marietta Church had five pastors- (exact dates are sketchy during those early years.)
F.R. Humphries was the first pastor following the organization of the church in June 21, 1931. He served the church for a short time. Jim Ingram and Grady McCoy served in a temporary capacity as pastor until a permanent pastor could be called.
E.C.Hilton was called to serve as the permanent pastor. One day during a Worship Service, Pastor Hilton passed out and was pronounced dead by a physician who had previously served as a physician in the U.S. Navy. M.E. Wilson, Ralph Cantrell, and Grady McCoy surrounded him and prayed for him and he was revived. this was documented by Dolly Rich, Ralph and Annie Cantrell.
A.W. Stover also pastored the Marietta Church for a period during the 1930's.
During the 1940's the following Ministers Served as Pastors J.C. Spence Lewis Conner Connie Payne A.J. Stover was called to pastor a second time in 1946 - 1951 Pastor Stover had a weekly Sunday Morning Service on WFOM< a local radio station and during his pastorate a parsonage was purchased adjacent to the church property on North Ave.
Aaron Couch served as pastor from 1951 - 1952,
Allen Potts Served from 1952 - 1953.
W.W. Willoughby served from 1953 - 1955 and during his tenure the Church Located On North Ave was remodeled.
Walter Phillips served as pastor From 1955 - 1959,.During a business Meeting on September 30, 1956 a motion was made to move dirt and to put Pastor Phillips in charge of building a new brick church in back of the existing wooden framed building. The church would continue worshiping in the wood frame building until the new brick church could be built. Motion was made by Curt Hamby, and second by Hugh Power. In a subsequent meeting in January 12, 1957 Pastor Phillips was put in charge of selling the old church building by sealed bids. of course the building would have to be moved and it was sold and moved to another location by the buyer. During Pastor Phillips term while he and his wife were on vacation the parsonage was destroyed by fire. A new brick parsonage was built on the same spot where the old one once stood.
Earl Grey Served as Pastor from 1959 - 1962 in 1960 - 1961 a first floor educational wing and kitchen were added to the back of the brick church on North Avenue. Pastor Gray resigned in 1962
J. Lamar Gilmer was appointed as Pastor to replace Pastor Gray in 1962 . During this time the stage in the sanctuary was enlarged , a choir loft was constructed along with a baptismal pool in the church.
Avery G. Montgomery served as Pastor from 1962 - 1966. Under his leadership a second floor was built on top of the Educational building on the North Avenue Church.
Ralph E. Bryant served as Pastor from 1966 - 1971. Under his leadership the North Avenue property was sold and our current structure located on Canton Road was built.
Therman Hester served as pastor from 1971 - 1973 he and his family had attended the church under the pastorate of Pastor Bryant. Pastor Hester was a expert builder and cabinet man he built the Bookcases and kitchen cabinets in the downstairs offices and kitchen as well as doing all the woodwork for the stained glass cross this was all don under Pastor Bryant's leadership. E.E. Ross Served as Pastor from 1973 - 1974 While serving as pastor a Child Care Center was began his wife directed the center without monetary compensation until it became a profitable entity.
Bob N. Minter served as pastor from 1974 - 1976 during which time a new parsonage was constructed on Westmoreland Drive. Pastor Minter and his wife continued the Child Care Center started by the Ross's Enough revenue was generated from the Child Care Center to make payments on the new parsonage, as well as opay the churches insurance and utilities. During this time our Youth Choir Also placed first in state competitions.
H. Hubert Hill Pastored from 1976-1977
A.T. Panter Jr., Pastored from 1977 - 1991. Under Pastor Panters administration, the second-floor educational wing and fellowship hall was constructed as well as the Family Life Center (Gymnasium) the Basement at the parsonage was also completed
Joe Muse Pastored from 1991 - 1992
R. Glenn Roundtree Pastored from 1992 - 1994 During which time the choir loft was lowered and the sanctuary refurbished.
R.L. Black PAstored from 1994 - 2004. Under his administration a new parsonage with accerage was purchased.
Dr. Douglas Stephenson Pastored from 2004 - 2007
Bishop Dannie M. Hix Serves as out Current Pastor since 2007 and under his Leadership the church purchased adjacent property and is experiencing renewed growth.
